Question:
I’m wanting to get a tattoo and your words have always meant so much to me. You are the artist that speaks to my soul like no one else. Would you be okay with me getting “in the end I want my heart to be covered in stretch marks” tattooed on my arm alongside an anatomical heart?
Also, can you tell us about some of your tattoos? Why did you choose them? What’s your favorite and your least favorite tattoo you have?
Answer:
I am always wowed when someone decides to tattoo a line of mine on their body. If there are folks who don’t relate to that as an enormous compliment, I’m not one of them. Each time it has happened over the course of my career I have longed for a time machine that would fly me back in time to tell the little kid I used to be. In kindergarten, when I developed my first callus from writing with a pencil, I thought, “My hand is changing shape to prove that I’m a writer!” That kid would do a hundred cartwheels in celebration of your tattoo.
I have a pretty casual relationship with my own tattoos. I often just show up to the tattoo shop with no plan at all, and decide in a minute or two what I’d like a stranger to etch into my body for the rest of my life. But, since you asked:
